Do I want a fence?

Maybe the home sits on a large custom lot with no retaining walls. Maybe the home has a swimming pool. Possibly your family has gotten a new puppy. If you have answered yes to any of these questions, then a fence is probably the right choice. Now is the time to research local fence requirements. Some towns will only allow certain types and styles of fence, this is good to know before choosing a fence as it may change the whole backyard plan.

Fencing options for Pool Owners

Pool safety is the most common reason for fencing in a backyard. Did you know that most towns require this fence to protect others from the pool and not your family? Most towns require a minimum of 48″ above finished ground level facing away from the pool. Gates must be self closing and swing away from the pool. The distance between horizontal rails must be 45″ apart and vertical rails no more than 4″ apart. If a chain link fence is being considered the mesh must be no more than 1 1/4″ square unless slats are provided. The idea is to make it more difficult to open the gate as well as harder to climb over.
